I use proven non-medical, drug-free, collaborative approaches like strategic psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy. These techniques have been used for thousands of years to help people access and change their subconscious thought processes in order to heal, overcome fear and build self belief at home, at work, at play, at school and anywhere else in between.
Today, they’re used to create behavioural change and promote mental wellbeing in business, coaching, counselling, education, health & fitness, personal growth, professional development, relationships, sport and more.
While I work with lots of different people across lots of different issues, I specialise in working with men to help them understand and address what I call Manxiety — the underlying patterns of anxiety that shape the way many men think, feel and behave these days. I work with school kids, teens, young adults, business owners, athletes, dads... basically if you're a bloke aged anywhere between 8 and 80!
I live and practice on the Northern Beaches of Sydney with two spirited children, a boisterous Labrador… and a very patient wife. Whenever I get some peace I like to write, draw, read and cook.
I love being outdoors - surfing, swimming, paddle-boarding, mountain-biking and trail running. Whenever possible I run introduction sessions and client interviews in the open air with a 'Walk and Talk'.
I left school with below average grades, a heap of bad attitude and a love for art, drama and playing bass guitar. I got sent off to work as a cowboy or ‘gaucho’ in Argentina before heading to art school and a career as a sculptor… but I wasn’t very good at it!
Somewhere along the way I took a different turn and ended up as a designer in a digital design agency in London building interactive videos and websites, then I took a break to go backpacking around Australia.
Well that was the plan. The trip started in Sydney, but I never left. I spent the next 20 years working in Australia and Asia as a digital marketing creative director, influencing consumer behaviour for a wide range of brands, including Microsoft, Xbox, Google, Coca-Cola, Mastercard, Nikon, Telstra, Westpac, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Weight Watchers (those last two at the same time!). I was a founding partner in, Apparent Communications, one of Australia's largest independent customer experience agencies.
In parallel, since 1995, I have been a creative director for Extreme, an 'action, adventure and fun' youth brand based in Europe. Today Extreme runs a number of international destination and content activities, plus it engages an army of 6 million Facebook fans with a broad range of content.
I am also a freelance video producer and writer, mostly working on action and adventure sport projects… as well as the occasional TV ad.
I love the creative process, and I also love working with people. Over the years I have run big teams, managed many egos (including my own) and worked under pressure to deliver engaging ideas, campaigns and content that create connection, change behaviour, build brands and generate sales. I have found that this experience helps me and my clients enormously in the delivery of effective therapeutic practice.
A few years ago I set up Headland CX — an independent customer experience and behavioural change consultancy focused on technology, education and healthcare, quickly becoming involved in a number of wellbeing initiatives and organisations, such as:
Helping to promote and deliver mental health programs became an increasing part of my work.
When I was doing a project for The Institute of Applied Psychology I learned about the effectiveness of strategic psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy in helping people to change their behaviour to overcome issues.
I realised that there were many similarities between the creative and design process I had been following for 25 years and how psychotherapy creates behavioural change. I decided there and then that I could help people to believe in themselves, which I now deliver through my clinic, Headland Health.
I am a graduate of the Institute of Applied Psychology and a member of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association.
